A smartphone is a piece of handheld technology that provides its owner/user with unlimited access to the digital world. While the smartphone was once praised for its ability to better integrate the digital and physical worlds, recent years have proven that this may not be beneficial to society at large. The effect of smartphones can best be observed in the reduced attention spans of young people and the social handicapping of all. Once chatty train cars and waiting rooms are now full of people with their heads down, hypnotized by the screen. It is the smartphone that has enabled the digital world to eclipse the physical, leaving us all gazing, slack jawed at the blackened sun.
